Fly Tying Classes

Beginning Classes will cover the fundamental techniques used in fly tying. From the correct way to insert the hook in the vise to the final whip finish, beginning classes will teach the how's and why's of flytying. Step-by-step, students will learn how to tie the generic patterns used all over the world, plus some of our very effective local patterns.

Class meets one night a week at the shop from 6:30 to 8:00 for four weeks. Two patterns will be learned every week, each one using a new and different technique. By the end of the four weeks students will be able to look at a fly and be able to figure out how to tie it. Students need to have their own vises and tools. All materials and hooks are provided by the shop. Ample supplies will be issued, so patterns can be practiced at home.

Intermediate Class focuses mainly on dry flies and bass flies. Students should already know the basics and are now ready to tackle some of the more difficult tying tasks. Different winging materials will be used and different hackling methods will be taught to give students optional ways to build a dry fly. Bass flies will teach how to spin and trim deer hair. It's a great night to make a mess and get away with it. Due to the difficulty of tying some of these patterns, seven patterns will be taught during the four week class.
